Choice Based lettings (CBL) is a new way of allocating social housing - both Council and Housing Association properties - and which the government expects all housing authorities to introduce by 2010.
Maldon District Council, along with 7 other local authorities who form the Greater Haven Gateway sub region are working to establish a common CBL system.
The local authorities that form the Partnership are:
- Babergh District Council
- Braintree District Council
- Colchester Borough Council
- Ipswich Borough Council
- Maldon District Council
- Mid Suffolk District Council
- Suffolk Coastal District Council
- Tendring District Council - deferred to a later date.
This partnership has many advantages and allows standardisation to the way in which people can apply for housing.
A common method will be used for assessing housing need. It will also allow people to apply for homes that become empty outside the traditional district and county boundaries. Currently, people without a connection to a particular area are accepted onto the Housing Register, but, have little or no priority for housing.
The social housing sector within the district accounts for about 10% of the total properties, which is much lower than other districts and is just under half of the national average so we are dependant on private sector housing and this is utilised in the prevention of homelessness.
Maldon District Council Housing Options Team want to help you to stay in your home whether you are in your own home, renting from a private or Registered Social Landlord (RSL, sometimes known as a Housing Association), living with friends or family or in any other situation.
Burnham and Southminster One Places are working in partnership with Maldon District Council to enable individuals to access these services. Individuals are encouraged to visit either Burnham or Southminster One Place for support and assistance in accessing the Choice Based Lettings system.
Appointments are not always necessary, however it is advisable to book if possible.
